Run for your life – The benefits of running for overall longevity

What if I told you there was a pill that was proven to;

  • Have Anti-aging affects on our skin and body
  • Combat neurological diseases
  • Fight depression and anxiety
  • Increase fat loss
  • Improve heart health
  • Increase metabolism

This drug would be worth billions.. it would be called the miracle drug.

Is running a miracle cure?

Running is a simple sport, one foot in front of the other, repeat. No fancy equipment needed. But could it be the miracle cure for disease and longevity that we have all been looking for?

When it comes to exercise we all have our different ways of moving our body, so any form or exercise will have similar benefits. The most important thing is finding something you love, but for me and many others that is the ancient art of running.

The benefits of running have been greatly studied over the years. The biggest study published about running and longevity took into account over 55,000 people—14,000 of whom reported to be runners.

Participants were tracked for 15 years; after the 15 years, they determined that runners had a 45% reduced risk of death from heart attacks and strokes, as well as a 30% reduced risk of death from anything.

This benefit was seen even with as little as five to 10 minutes a day of running, even at paces as slow as 10 minute mile pace,

Other studies other studies had found that in addition to reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, running also lowered the chances of developing cancer and neurologic diseases (such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s).

They also noted was that running wasn’t the stand alone factor in this, running seemed to create other healthy habits within their life’s. People who ran tended to eat healthier and have more active lifestyles outside of running.

But what about arthritis?

“Running is bad for your knees”…

Everyone

Knee and joint pain may be common complaints among runners, but chances are this is caused by bad running form or tight muscles around the knee…. slim that arthritis is the culprit like many claim In fact.

Multiple studies have shown that regular running strengthens the joints and actually protects against development of osteoarthritis later in life.

Ok you might be ready for a run now but there’s more…

As well as physical benefits which everyone knows, the mental health benefits of running are a huge boost to our longevity.

Physical activity, such as running, greatly affects our mental well-being. It can help to increase our self-esteem, reduce stress and anxiety, help prevent the development of mental health problems, and improve the quality of life for people experiencing poor mental health.
